My review: Safe Word by Teresa Mummert

Title: Safe Word
Author: Teresa Mummert
Genre: Erotica
Publication Date: May 13, 2013
A chance meeting with a stranger can turn your entire world upside down.
When Colton 'Colt' Bishop enters a bar in New York City, he has a plan. His job is to find an easy target and take her back to his place for a few days. He is working his way up the crime ladder doing a job he never wanted.
Lily Hilton has it all, but is hiding from a troublesome past. When she enters a bar downtown, and runs into her old high school crush, her entire world is turned upside down. She is determined to make him notice her, but that plan may work better than she expects. Colton does not hesitate to take Lily home and use her as his new pawn, but their past begins to catch up with them as their secrets unravel and he must decide what is more important to him, protecting Lily or himself.

Most people that know me know that I rarely ever give a rating below a 4.  In this case I had no choice I really wanted to love this book I did, but I just couldn't...  This book started off so promising with Rose finding her boyfriend from high school Colt who she hasn't seen in years.  They have a chance meeting in a bar one night but what Rose doesn't know or doesn't appear to know at the time is that Colt is not the man she once knew.  He's a former cop that got kicked off the force and is now living on the wrong side of the law.  He basically kidnaps her and holds her hostage in his apartment.  Colt has been able to turn off his emotions for a long time being able to feel nothing for the women he holds hostage turning them over to his boss when the time comes the rule being the women are to remain untouched.  Colt breaks all of his rules with Rose now known as Lily having had a past with her and them both knowing so much about one another.

What really helped with this story were the flashbacks it helped to understand the characters the way they were then and the way they are now.  This story started off strong and looked like it was going to be a really good one.  But I had a few issues.  The first being that obviously when you see the title Safe Word the first thing you think of is that this book is going to be full of BDSM which obviously is what you would expect, however there was only one time when the safe word was even mentioned/used.  My other major issue was how much did Rose know and what exactly was Colt the good guy or the bad guy?  It never did say and even at this moment three days after I finished the book I still can't figure out exactly what the deal was with Colt.  I loved the story itself especially the flashbacks but that right there killed it for me.  It really would have been nice to hear what their secrets were as they were never actually revealed.  Overall it was a good story but it just wasn't enough for me to give it a 4 or 5 star rating.
