Review: Forbidden Angel by Megan D. Martin

Forbidden Angel by Megan D. Martin

Historical Romance

Published: December 7, 2012

Length: 75 pages

When captured by the Nazis, Sarah finds herself in a concentration camp that not only brings her closer to death...but closer to love.

Sarah Brenner, a young Jewish woman, is terrified when she finds herself in the heat of a railcar bound for a work camp in Nazi Germany. For years she, along with her mother and sister, had hidden from the SS, but no one could hide forever. Her hatred for those who have enslaved them is ever-growing, especially when they arrive and she encounters the shockingly handsome Nazi doctor who can't seem to keep his eyes--or hands--off her.

Aurel Rothstein is not your everyday concentration camp physician. The endless prisoners and lack of care he's allowed to give have made him numb to the work he so coveted. It isn't until he comes face to face with a beautiful prisoner that his heart becomes involved with his job--a forbidden and fatal move to any Nazi.

When a vile soldier takes direct interest in Sarah, she will be forced to make a choice that will change her life forever: ignore the pull toward the handsome doctor or give in to the forbidden passion he awakens with only a look. Either way they both risk everything...

My Review:

Forbidden Angel gets right into the story and is short enough that you can read it in one day.  So if you are looking for a book that you can read in less than one day that is short and gives you an escape from your life, then you’ll enjoy this book.

Within the first chapter we are introduced to Sarah Brenner a young Jewish woman and her younger sister Daniela and her mother, Hannah, who have been shoved into a rail car along with hundreds of other women, most of which have died from the heat and hunger some of them even resorting to cannibalism to survive; their destination, a work camp in Nazi, Germany.  They have managed to hide from the SS for four years, but eventually they were found in the basement of a friend’s house and forced onto the rail car.  While Sarah is scared, she still puts on a brave front for her sister and mother when they are removed from the railcar and forced to make a line leading to their death.  The women are split into two groups one going to the left and one going to the right.  She doesn’t have to look long to know that one group will be lead to their death and the other group will live and go to work.

It’s here that she first meets Aurel Rothstein a doctor at the concentration camp.  He’s unlike the other members of the army, he wishes he didn’t have to decide whether these people get to live or die, but he does his job going through the motions day in and day out numb.  That is until he gets his first glimpse of Sarah.  Sarah won’t look at him and while he usually doesn’t get close to the prisoners he approaches to get a closer look.  When the doctor stands in front of her she finally looks up to meet his gaze and while she doesn’t want to be, she is attracted to the doctor just as he is attracted to her.  He sees right away that she will do anything for her mother and sister even giving her younger sister her shoes so she doesn’t have to walk around barefoot.

The doctor does whatever he can to make the prisoners more comfortable, he doesn’t perform experiments as the other physicians do, he feeds them when he can, and even gives them water and medical care.  He doesn’t do any different for Sarah and her family when he gets the chance after she is beaten by one of the other prisoners while working.  From that first moment they kiss the entire story changes, he knows he shouldn’t be attracted to this angel as he calls her and she shouldn’t be attracted to this monster as she calls him but both are unable to fight the way that they feel.  He doesn’t feel that he is good enough for her and she fights with all her might against the feeling she feels towards him even though she can sense he is different from the other officers at the work camp.  So when her mother is attacked and she is pursued by one of the other officers an unattractive man named Ivo, Aurel does everything he can to protect his angel from the man who likes to rape and torture the prisoners.

In this story you meet and fall in love with the doctor in a time when being a Nazi and falling in love with a prisoner can lead to death.  I loved every minute of this book, it was well written and enjoyable and I love how the story turned out.  I wish there was an epilogue so I could see what happened to Aurel and Sarah, but not having one didn’t affect my feelings towards the story.  So if you are looking for a romantic story that will keep you reading right to the very end, then this is the book for you I would definitely read it again!
