New Adult Contemporary

From New York Times and USA Today Bestselling author, Marquita Valentine, comes the 4th book in her new adult series, BOYS OF THE SOUTH.

There's only one place in the world Lacey Evans feels normal- the roller derby track. When she laces up her skates and fastens her helmet, she's powerful and in charge. She knows exactly what to do and what to say. The rules are clear and penalties are enforced for those who don't follow them. But in the read world, she's far from powerful and in charge. She never knows exactly what to do and say. For years, she counted on one person to be exactly who he said he was--her best friend, Wyatt Tanaka. Only she changed the rules on him, without any warning, and now she's the one being punished.

Marine veteran, Wyatt Tanaka, came home to a heroes welcome. But he's hiding a secret, one that could potential destroy his life. He's doing the best he can, trying to cope with the guilt and the pain of the girl he loves pushing him away by doing all the things he'd sworn not too. Women, bars, drugs and drinking are what consume him. With Lacey's new rules, he has nothing to hold on to. Nothing to keep in from feeling dead.

Then one night, he goes too far, gets in too deep, and when the truth comes out... will Lacey keep pushing him away or help save him?

Review

For those of you that have been following the Boys of the South series, you're going to love Lacey and Wyatt's story. At long last it's time for Lacey and Wyatt's story.

If there's one thing that Lacey is good at, it's keeping Wyatt at arm's length. To Lacey, Wyatt is not only her best friend, but the man that she's in love with. But there's a problem. Lacey promised the Tanaka's that she would stay away from their son because they didn't feel she was good enough for their son. If that's not enough, Lacey has dubbed herself as a freak that cannot be repaired. After years of visiting different doctors, no one can diagnose her disease. She doesn't adapt well to change and goes through severe panic attacks. What helps to sooth her? Wyatt and roller derby. Back from his tour with the Marines, Lacey takes it too far one night and kisses Wyatt changing the dynamic of their relationship. But after a lot of time spent in one another's arms, Lacey tells Wyatt that they can only be friends, pushing him away.

Wyatt has been in love with Lacey for a long time so when she kisses him one night, he takes that as his green light to move forward. That is until she abruptly steps on the brakes and sends them back into the friend zone. Hurt, battling guilt over his dead friend, and heartbroken, Wyatt does the unthinkable. He goes after women, booze, and drugs to the point where he can't remember much of what he's done before. Many women share his bed, but no matter what he does, his heart won't let him forget Lacey.

When Lacey's family gets accepted to join the mission they've been praying for, Lacey is left behind while her entire family moves to Turkey. Unable to afford living on her own and scared, Lacey turns to the one person she can count on and the one person she trusts more than anyone else in the world, Wyatt. Wyatt wants to run the other way, but he accepts her as his roommate. Right from the start they have trouble being around one another as the sexual tension grows between them on a daily basis. But Lacey is determined to make Wyatt happy again so she sets him up on a date and pushes him away. Upset and hurt Wyatt does the same to her. It's a never ending cycle of hurt and pain while all the while they love one another. Can they ever truly admit what they mean to one another? Or will Wyatt's secrets and guilt destroy their relationship even before they are able to take it to the next level.

This book was a little different from the other books in this series. This one touched more of Wyatt's guilt and how he dealt with his feelings and Lacey's disease (which I will not name). At first I thought I wasn't going to enjoy this installment in the series, but I was quick to remember why I originally fell in love with Lacey and Wyatt. They both love one another but are so unwilling to admit to each other how they feel. They just go in circles and hurt one another and it will pull at the strings of your heart from the beginning right down to the very end of the book. This novel wasn't too short or too long it was just right and I loved every second of it. I cannot wait for the next book in the series, because based off of what I have seen in this novel the next one is going to be even better than this one was. I give it 4 stars.
