My review & giveaway - Emerge by S.E. Hall

Laney Walker is a quick witted, athletic, southern tomboy who lets few get too close, using her sarcastic zingers to deflect. She also has no idea how others view her, Evan having protected and coveted her since they were children. But college puts a gap between Laney and Evan that neither of them were prepared for- old relationships are tested, new ones are formed and nothing will ever be the same.

Especially when in walks one Dane Kendrick, not at all the familiar, southern charmer of home, but an animal all his own.

A story of growing up, friendship, loyalty, first love, primal love...and life.

Since she was a kid, Evan Allen has been there for Laney.  Protecting her, loving her, always being there when he needed her.  He's been the one constant in her life, her best friend, always at her softball games to cheer her on.  Finally in their senior year of high school, Evan decides to take a chance and tell Laney how he feels about her.  So much time was wasted with him not telling her how he felt, and their time together is short.  Why?  Because in the fall Evan will be attending UGA on a football scholarship and Laney didn't get accepted.

Forced to go separate ways, Laney goes to attend Southern and Evan heads off to UGA.  Laney is starting a new chapter in her life, telling Evan that it's best they just going back to being best friends and not boyfriend and girlfriend.  She knows it's only a matter of time before he gives into temptation and ends up with a girl at college.  Laney is left with no friends, no boyfriend, without her dad, and feeling alone.  At first Evan calls and texts all the time, making Laney feel loved and cherished but as time goes on, she's met with more voicemails and unanswered texts than she can handle.

Her savior in college is her roommate Bennett who I loved instantly.  She wants Laney to go out and experience college, to live again dragging her to the Hall Crawl.  It's here that she meets some of the people who will become her new friends.  Zach, Tate, Sawyer, and Tate's younger brother Dane.  From the start Dane has been the hot man who comes into Laney's life and is there for her every step of the way.  Caring for her, making sure she's never lonely, and what it's like to be cherished by a man.  What ensues is a love triangle and a battle of feelings that will leave Laney more confused than ever.

She's loved Evan since she was a kid but when he's gone so often and off enjoying his life in college she begins to question how much she loves him, Dane is there for her every step of the way, talking to her, showering her with gifts and encouraging words, who will she choose and will she ever come out the same when that decision is made?

At first when I started reading this story I didn't think I was going to enjoy it.  Just seemed to me like a girl who would go off to college and stay in love with Evan forever.  Basically sit around and wait for his next phone call or text.  But what I ended up reading was so much more than that.  There's laughter and friendships that are formed, but more than that underneath is the hurt and heartache of a girl who's faced with being away from her dad and best friend for the first time in her entire life and it was very hard to watch, my heart broke for Laney.  But Laney grew up and developed so much during this story and I loved every second of it.  I cannot wait for the second book to see what happens with Evan, I'm hoping this story will be as captivating as this one was, 5 stars!
